"THE SPORTSMAN"

I was sitting here pondering all the issues and answers that have been proposed in this time of political rejuvenation and one thing seems to keep popping up and also seems to be the center piece on the table...The ART Tourists. I personally would rather see our energies and resources directed more towards the Family Tourist and The Sportsmen Tourist. We always have been a Mecca for hunters, fishermen, hikers, campers, snowmobilers, hang gliders, history buffs, just to mention a few. We are so rich in natural attractions it staggers the mind......just give the tourist a gateway to the attractions. We have a city run campground...so why not a city run, or in conjunction with private enterprise, a tourist camp, a base for snowmobilers to leave from, a hikers respite, a hunters haven, etc. A nice rustic log building placed on city land where the sportsman can be catered to and be made to feel that they are wanted. Inexpensive rooms to be rented, good wholesome meals, a scenic four season view, a tavern, transportation to and from downtown. Ya, Ya I know it ain't that simple, is the standard answer, well it is! "BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME" Lets be real people...a large empty room, a boulder on a string, and half a 57 Chevy sticking out of a brick wall... ain't on most peoples list of things to see. Lets not just cater to that small group when some real money can be made with a minimal of investment, catering to the SPORTSMAN..... What do you think? It's YOUR DIME!

Except for the fact that they apparently are.

Really! You can only say that because they are the only attraction we profess to have and ergo that is the crowd that we draw. The ART crowd has it's nich, and I will conceed that MOCA and the mills are a haven for them, but they are only a teeny tiny specialized group that the majority of the general public could give a hoot about. With expanding into the groups that have a grip on reality you really could attract monies that would stay in North Adams...southview

This would never fly with Tingleass. She would have a hissy fit. Do realize you would have to cross streams with those trails, never mind the road to bring the hunters up and down the mountain or the equipment to build said cabin. Forget it, the only thing you can do is drive your SUV on existing roads and look through binoculars at the wonder views. Seeing how reparations for past deeds are in vogue now, I think there should be surcharge for using the Hoosac Tunnel, the Mohawk Trail, Mt. Greylock, Greylock Glen and any other man-made debacle that has spoiled our scenic area. When the pool of money is big enough, we trash them all.

What I really think is: MoCA is a good idea, the hunter's lodge is a good idea, high tech business is a good idea, windmills are a good idea (steady POD), etc. My point being, and always has been, that what will be best for NA is not to hang our hat on one idea. NA needs a diversified economic base. Basing the economy on tourism alone is no better than when NA was Spraguesville. Having councilors and a Mayor who want to work towards that goal would be my goal. No arguing JB and crew have done a great job rising up out of the ashes of Spraguesville. But now is not the time to coast. We have zigged, but every town in Berkshire County is trying zig - now we need to zag!

I think that is my write-in campaign slogan. "Da Snoop - He's Got Da Zag!"

I would be in favor of focusing part of our energies towards attracting the Sportsman to the area...we get good numbers of them now, but who's to say we can't get more?

I just read the Mayor's Bio in the Transcript. I promise I made my last post before I read the Bio. It's scary how close the two are.

Maybe JB has been reading my posts?? I'm resonating with the Mayor!! No wonder why my head is vibrating.

An indoor target range at the Clark building would be great idea...we sure could use one...they are guite the posh in things now...teaching our youth how to properly handle firearms, a place for the cops to practice..insted of outdoors...centrally located...a lot of the people at city hall shoot, as well people at State Teachers...all I see are pluses...put the bug in the mayors ear...sv

I suggested this idea years ago for the eclipse mill long before Mr. Rudd purchased it. I was thinking about making it a multisport facility. Target shooting, indoor driving range, mini golf, batting cages, basketball court, etc. It didn't get much traction then, but maybe now. . .
