PAY AS YOU GO vs TAXES

Sorry about yesterday my friends, but Adelphia High Speed, again decided to take a vacation? I had Adelphia No Speed all day yesterday....Ok, Anyway...Let me ask all you aspiring governmentos this!...Why is it when you go to city hall for anything, on personal matters not business matters, you have to PAY! Each department has a budget that is paid for with TAX monies...Salaries, supplies, etc, But every little piece of paper you get they want 5$ or more. Every permit you ask for they have there hand out...WHY ? Don't give me that lame excuse that it is to help pay the expenses of the department...Hog Snot...as Joe Smuck private citizen these services should be FREE. What do you think? Is City Hall a STORE or a SERVICE?...southview

What percentage of our total budget comes from the property tax?

You would know that one...I would say not much after deducting the monies that have to go to the school system....southview

Are you infering that the city departments could not function properly just on their budgets? That they depend on monies collected from citizens (not bussines)?...southview

These are approximate figures-- but close

Total budget $ 33.3 Million

Schools $15.6 million
That's a little less than half

Receipts: Chapter 70 schools
$14 million
(shortfall of $1.6 million)

General State Add $4 million

Property Taxes: $9 million
(@ 27% of total budget)

FEES: $6.5 million
includes auto excise,
hotel and other fees

Subtract the $15.6 for schools from the total and you get $17.7 which covers everything else----plug in the $9 million in property taxes and $6.5 in fees andand you are close to balancing the budget

Figures are approximate remember but the point is this
Property taxes = 27% of total
Fees = 18 % of total-----you need FEES to balance the budget----or you cut services-----chbpod

There's a way to get the professional contractor vote. Raise the fees they have to pay.

So this is an extension of your business vs. residential tax rate complaining?

What a maroom--- we try to keep the tax rate AND the fee rate low---because of the demographics of the people inNorth Adams---this is not a wealthy community---did you put your finger in a socket too many times???? chbpod
