" WHY CAN'T I FIND SOMEONE TO VOTE FOR? "

Good Morning People. I would venture to say, even at this point in time, most of you already know which party and candidate you are going to vote for in the November Election. It would seem in today's reality that you either are a Democrat or a Republican. We are , of course not just a two party system, but we seem to only hear about these two and have become indoctrinated into believing that there are only two parties, with the exception of the Independents, who are regulated to a non important fringe group. In my search for someone or party to vote for I am perplexed by what choices I have. I lean towards small government intrusion into my personal life but on the other hand demand that government protect me from the predators that want to control me for their own interest. this would seem to make me a Republican? I demand a party that works to enhance my well being while protecting my rights under the Constitution. This seems to make me a Democrat. Unfortunately if I choose using these guidelines I would be living in fantasy land. Both choices are just the opposite of what they claim to stand for. Not only that but both seem to a shadow of the other. They have become a blurred mix not really standing for their purported platform, but standing more for self perpetuation. To "Keep It Simple Stupid" The Republicans have morphed into a party dedicated to the enhancement of the profit barrens, while the Democrats have become a party that is dedicated to the finite control of every aspect of our lives, a no choice society where government dictates what is good for you and you have no option of making a personal choice. But all this said you can see that one choice is just a mirror of the other.
So what do I do?..... Do I choose the party that I believe is the lesser of the two evils? Do I not vote at all? Do I vote for one of those other nondescript parties listed on the ballot?..........At this point in time I am perplexed and in need of input. So today I am asking for your help in making a decision.............. IT's YOUR DIME!

Southview the choice seems simple to me. Since voting either Dem or Reb. will amount to the same thing, those two parties nullify each other. That leaves a third part vote that will actually allow you to cast two votes simultaneoulsy. Vote #1 for your candiated of choice, vote #2 sends a message to the Republicrats that you did indeed vote and you found neither of their candidates acceptable or equally as bad and it doesn't make difference which one sits in the Oval office.

If you simply choose not to vote, you get lumped into the crowd that are labeled too lazy, dumb, or could care less.

Clearly your choice must be for a third party candidate. Some people say that voting 3rd party is throwing away your vote, but I feel just the opposite. Voting Rebuplicat is a wasted vote as it send no message other than one is a lemming and the outcome is still the same.

Da snoop.....I beleive In the last election I voted Libertairian? Seemed the only logical choice! Although I have to admit I am dumb as to what they are all about but seems I liked some of their PR. No waite!.....I voted GREEN last election. Thats right I did. I like "Consumer Reports" and I associate Ralph with that mag. You know someone actually telling it as it is, honesty and all that. More a message vote than a canadate vote. Hell it is all a waste of time anyway, our vote for pres means squat. I am going to get rid of Teddy and his crowd though. I am a gun nut and don't like what is going on with that crowd. You seem to be in the same quandry as I, as the rest of us! Nowhere is there a viable canidate to choose from. There really should be a "NONE OF THE ABOVE" box so as to really send a message to the powers that be. I see a crusade in the making.

I have always wished for a "None of the Above" choice. But in reality know that this is not possible. With this box there would two possible outcomes, "None" wins and they we have to do it all over again - twice the money spent, twice the annoying political ads. Or, “None” comes in second or third and though the candidates will pretend it means something, it will be ignored.

One possible solution I guess could be that the candidates that were defeated by "None" couldn't run again in that election, but there is the possibility that we have a FLA 2000 all over again where one term has, or is about to, end and we have no successor to the throne.

One thing that I think isn't done enough, for incumbents anyway, is to hold their feet to the fire and take their talking points/promises from the previous election and make them address them one by one.

You are correct on all points. The problem is that we the people do not have any control of our gouvernment anymore so as to make changes we want. The powers that be and those professional politicions will not allow us to make any changes to their cozy system. That is why you need term limits and for the people to gain back control of the process.

Well, actually, I would venture to say that at this point still the vast majority of people don't even know who all the candidates are, let alone which of them they'll vote for in Nov. (Besides, the Dem. primary in Sept. will knock out three of the current candidates and narrow it down to only the Dem., the sole Rep. Matt Kinnaman (www.mattkinnaman.com) and the independent whose running--his most influential political ally is the guy lampooned as Pittsfield's village idiot (Rinaldo del Gallo).

The race will be decided by the outcome of the Dem. primary, or so conventional wisdom says. It's settled in most people's minds that the Republican, esp. this Rep., Matt Kinnaman, who is building a reputation for vanity campaigns, will be of no serious concern to the Democrat's intention to succeed retiring Sen. Andrea Nuciforo(D).

I am, for full disclosure, supporting Marge Ware (www.wareforsenate.org) who's been blogging for over a year (well before she thought of becoming a candidate) and who's been working for working families and disadvantaged seniors almost her entire professional career (she is now a communications director with Elder Services).

Whereas I understand your generalized descriptions of the two national parties, I think they're more caricatures of the real organizations. While the GOP has CERTAINLY worked from its top leadership down to service corporate interests first and foremost, not all Republicans are like that. And for further considerations, a lot of Democrats (though not all or most) also work to help corporate profit margins. And more, I think what you wrote would really only apply to the parties and their national operations. Local politics sees Democrats far more Democratic (but unfortunately, it also sees GOP operatives stubborningly and uncompromisingly far-right and marginalized, truly, into a non-party status more like a clubhouse gang of homophobes and ultra-pro-business lecturers than an alternative choice to the Democrats).

But although the Democrats reign supreme, it is not a single establishment (though there is a central core with most power winning most of the time but losing that power every day) that manages everything. There is large diversity in Democratic candidates (nearly always forcing primary campaigns) with social conservatives and fiscal progressives usually found among the bunch.

It's really a big tent, that actually shows party politics to be obsolete, as just the one party (which could be like no party) here provides diversity enough.

I wish I had more time to get into this. I want to help.

There are four Dems:

Marge Ware (www.wareforsenate.org)
Ben Downing (www.bendowning.org)
Chris Hogkins no website
Helen Sharron www.helensharron.com)

One independent I can't recall the name of..

and one GOP contender:

Matt Kinnaman (www.mattkinnaman.com)

-I will come back, with more info if I can! Also check my own blog as I just updated with a post on the state senate race.

I'll also give you details of the Governor's Council councilor race, distract attorney race, and 2nd Berkhisre District State Rep. race (a non-race, Denis Guyer, one-termer, will win re-election easily www.denisguyer.com).

Timmy, its my understanding that Southview's post was about the national elections and not the local (based on party descriptions).

Yes, but if he lives in Berkshire County, there aren't going to be any opportunities to vote in actual contested races for offices of the national government.

As can be found at the bottom of the my last comment, even beneath of signature, I began to explain, but erroneously pasted it while leaving it unfinished, why, if he's talking about voting in the upcoming elections, the only elections worth talking about are local/state; there are no contests either of the two national Congressional seats that will be up for re-election in November (Kennedy in the Senate, John Olver for this districts U.S. Congressman). Both Sen. Kennedy and Congressman Olver are running unopposed (if you don't consider, perhaps, some pathetically hopeless independent from Fingerbutt, MA that might being running and whom I'm unaware of).

If he lives in North Adams, all the races featuring serious contests that I am aware of and that he'll be able to vote in are (only to the best of my knowledge) as follows:

- Open state senate seat w/ a retired incumbent and a slew of candidates.

- Governors office, with the Democrat yet to be decided until the Sept. primary but with the GOP candidate, Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey, the known Republican candidate (as well as a third party--Green--and several independent, though hopeless, candidates, too). In this race, the BEST hope for a great Governor will be for Deval Patrick to win the Dem. primary and general elections.

- Berkshire County District Attorney race, with incumbent David Capeless running to be re-elected and facing challenger Judith Knight (who represented Kevin Sawin, the first of the "Barrington 17" teenagers prosecuted for selling small amounts of pot, agaisnt the D.A.). Capeless is running to win what would be his first full term, as the last election saw him as Acting D.A. seeking to validate completing the term the late Gerard Downing had won by beating Tim S-something in a special election.

- 1st Berkshire District State Rep. seat, with, I think, senior incumbent Rep. Dan Bosley running unopposed (unopposed, at least, by any serious opposition).

- Northern Berkshire Registrar of Deeds race ( I THINK there is a race in this... I am in the Central office's area, and there's an opening here, so...) but I don't know any of the candidates.

and so far that's all that I can think of for major elections this November. So, if Southview was wanting to participate in any races for national office, unless he's registered to vote in some other state, we won't have an opporuntunity this Nov. in this district. My advice would be then to get as involved as possible in the local/state races as they're the only ones, and as they offer the best opportunity for serious, influential involvement anyway.

The biggest local race is the state senate race for sure, with the D.A.'s race right behind it. I have interests in both races; I am working for one of the Democratic candidates in the senate race and have highest personal priority there, but next I have a strongly negative personal opinion of D.A. Capeless and REALLY want him to be unseated (however difficult the challenge), but have little time to invest in that race and can do no more than vote for candidate J. Knight and, POSSIBLY, write a letter to the editor soon before all my letter-focus will be for my candidate.

So, there's my two pennies.

p.s. I forgot to mention, state-wide, I left out the Attorney General, Lt. Gov., and Secretary of the Commonwealth races with all have contests.

Interesting, you would prefer an attorney that was able to get an admitted drug dealer out of the charges against him - who has now been arrested again as he increases his territory and inventory - over a DA who was doing what the people put him office for, including the passage of mandatory sentencing laws?

I can understand your dislike for the mandatory sentencing, but why go after the DA, why not work to change the laws? And why haven't you all been actively in this pursuit prior to Mr. Swain's arrest(s)?
